The Director General of the Kogi State Bureau of Public Procurement, Barrister Ehimoni Joshua, has called on stakeholders to prioritize the inclusion and welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
During an advocacy visit by the Persons with Disabilities Inclusive Budgeting Committee, Barrister Ehimoni reiterated his commitment to supporting PWDs by offering immediate employment to a member of the disability community within the Bureau. He highlighted the importance of addressing the challenges PWDs face, noting that their circumstances are not by choice but part of divine creation.
He emphasized that PWDs deserve equal opportunities and should not be marginalized, stressing the need to provide special attention rather than segregation. Barrister Ehimoni also encouraged society to view PWDs as capable individuals requiring access to appropriate resources.
Ambassador Idris Muraina, Chairperson of the Inclusive Budgeting Committee, informed the Bureau about the committee’s mission to ensure that PWDs are properly represented in the state’s budgeting process. He pointed out that PWDs are only advocating for what is rightfully theirs, and emphasized the need to end segregation for a more inclusive society.
Ambassador Idris also called for public facilities to be equipped with ramps to accommodate wheelchair users and advocated for the employment of PWDs in the public sector, stressing that they are not asking for handouts but for equal opportunities.
The Treasurer of the National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Arome, expressed gratitude to Barrister Ehimoni for his consistent support for the PWD community, noting the importance of creating an enabling environment for them to thrive.
Additionally, Barrister Lilian Okolo, Chairperson of the Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA), emphasized that full implementation of the disability law would help curb discrimination and marginalization, fostering a more inclusive society for all.
